  • Mother demands action to save soccer player on hunger strike

Author : Ma'an news agency | Readings : 29 | Date : 2012-05-31

GAZA CITY - The mother of an imprisoned Palestinian soccer player demanded Wednesday to know why officials aren't urgently seeking a solution to her son's extended hunger strike.

Mahmoud al-Sarsak, a forward in Palestine's national soccer team, has been on hunger strike for over 70 days in protest of his imprisonment in an Israeli jail without charge or trial.

Al-Sarsak was first arrested in July 2009 while leaving Gaza for a match in the West Bank. He went on hunger strike in March demanding to be informed of the reason behind his detention in Ramle.

Are they waiting to bring him dead to me? Why is there no one moving to save his life?” his mother told Ma'an on Wednesday, as her son entered his 73rd day without food.

The soccer player has not seen his family since his arrest, and his mom thinks of him "every minute as he is hungry and dying," and cannot stop crying while al-Sarsak's health deteriorates.
